Alfred Everitt Murray was born in London in 1832 and emigrated to the Cape Colony with his parents at
the age of four, settling in Port Elizabeth.
He was educated in Graham's Town and, after leaving school, joined the Civil Service as a Government
Surveyor. In that capacity he took up residence at East London where he became responsible for most
of the maps drawn for the local municipalities for three decades.
By 1900 his reputation was such that he had come to be regarded, along with such men as John Gately,
as one of the "Fathers" of the town.
He died on 19 April 1909 at the age of 77 and was buried in the East Bank Cemetery.
