Buffalo Street

Buffalo Street is in East London's Central Business District.

Originally that part of the town was known as Panmure and had been founded as early as 1857 when a large contingent of the British German Legion was settled there, followed a year later by German agricultural families.

Originally there were no streets, just cart tracks. It was only when a municipality was formed in 1873 that attention was drawn to the proper creation and naming of streets.

Another four years would drift by, however, before this was actually started. Buffalo Street was therefore constructed only in 1877. It received its name because of its close proximity to the Buffalo River.
